The Sony SLT A77 is described by Sony as an intermediate level Digital SLR. Based on features and price tag it is suited to you if you are fairly serious about photography. The camera body is made out of a magnesium alloy with seals around buttons and dials to protect from dust and moisture. This combination makes the SLT A77 quite robust compared with some lower level models. This camera uses Sony’s Translucent Mirror technology.
The SLT A77 has 24 megapixels. Fast moving action is catered for by a burst mode that is capable of shooting at a rate of 12 frames per second. Focusing options include a 19 point Auto Focus system. So that you know exactly where you were when a photo was taken Sony have equipped the SLT A77 with GPS tracking. Manual exposure settings are available too.
One feature that is not widely available with other Digital SLRs is a smart tele converter. When you turn this on the SLT A77 uses the centre 12 megapixels of a picture and increases magnification of your lens by up to 2x. This can have a major impact when photographing more distant subjects.
Sony have opted to build image stabilisation into the camera body. By taking this route you do not need to pay a premium for each lens you buy to have image stabilisation built in. There is also a depth of field preview button available.
If you like the idea of producing panoramic type shots the SLT A77 has a sweep panorama mode. In addition this feature also has a 3D option if you are planning to play back your images on a 3D television.
Other features that you may be interested in include a High Dynamic Range option. It can be hard for a camera to show high levels of detail in the darkest and lightest areas of photos of high contrast scenes. In HDR mode the SLT A77 merges three images into one in an attempt to overcome this.
The camera uses similar techniques to reduce noise and improve overall picture quality in Multi Frame Noise Reduction and Handheld Twilight modes.
The SLT A77 is also capable of shooting Full High Definition movies.
