Overview

The Sony A290 is a starter Digital SLR. It is aimed at someone looking for their first Digital SLR. It has 14 megapixels.

As you would expect the A290 has a full set of manual exposure controls including aperture priority and shutter priority. These give you creative control over the way your images will look.

Other features include a 2.7 inch LCD screen and a viewfinder. The viewfinder has a 95% field of view and 0.83x magnification. The focusing system offers you 9-point centre cross Auto Focus with EyeStart activation. For lowlight shooting you can increase ISO levels to a maximum of ISO 3200. If you are planning to shoot fast moving subjects you can switch to a burst mode that is able to fire off shots at a rate of 2.5 frames per second.

Sony have built in image stabilisation to the body of the A290. As well as protecting your images from blur through camera shake this also means that you do not need to pay a premium for lenses with image stabilisation built into them.

Compared to more advanced Digital SLRs the A290 is compact and lightweight. It also has an anti dust system that keeps dust away from your sensor.

You can buy the A290 either on its own or in kit form with lenses. There are two kits available. The first offers a single lens with a focal length equivalent to 18 – 55mm in 35mm format. The second kit offers an additional lens with a focal length equivalent to 55 – 200mm in 35mm format.
