Overview
The Pentax K-r is a 12 megapixel Digital SLR aimed at hobby photographers. It is a step up from the most basic Digital SLRs.
Features include a 3 inch LCD screen. The screen offers live view so that you can use it to compose your photos. The screen has 921,000 pixels. A viewfinder provides an alternative option for composition. The viewfinder has a 96% field of view with 0.85x magnification.
Focusing options include an 11 point Auto Focus system with 9 cross type sensors. High speed shooting is catered for by a burst mode that allows you to capture images at 6 frames per second. For lowlight photography the ISO range stretches from ISO 100 to 25,600. Another feature that can help when the light gets low and longer shutter speeds are required is image stabilisation. Pentax have built image stabilisation into the sensor of the K-r.
High Dynamic Range options are starting to appear on Digital SLRs. The K-r is able to merge 3 photos into 1 in order to bring out more detail in the shadows and highlights of high contrast scenes.
The K-r is also capable of shooting High Definition movies.
One feature that other brands do not tend to offer is the ability to use either a lithium ion battery or a set of AA batteries. This means that you do not need to buy a second lithium ion battery as you can switch to AA batteries in an emergency.
