Panasonic DMC LX7

The Panasonic Lumix DMC LX7 is a small, but powerful camera. It has a wide range of features that suit a serious photographer. It is small enough to slip into a good sized pocket, but the controls it has mean it is likely to be popular as a second camera as an alternative to a Digital SLR. Alternatively it can be used as a first choice camera by someone who does not need a lot of zoom.

Features include 10 megapixels and a 3.8x zoom lens. That may not sound like a lot of megapixels or zoom, but Panasonic have placed the emphasis on quality over quantity. The f/1.4 lens is ideal if you take a lot of pictures in lowlight or if you want to freeze movement. The amount of zoom can be increased to a maximum of 6.7x if you are prepared to reduce the number of megapixels to below 3. The lens has a nano coating to reduce ghosting and flare. Image Stabilisation is available to minimise unwanted picture blur.

The Lumix DMC LX7 has a set of manual controls (Fully Manual, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority) and you can also store your favourite settings in one of two custom modes. To help with any post production processing you have the option to store images in RAW format.

For composing images there is a 3 inch LCD screen. If you prefer to use a viewfinder you can buy one separately to attach via the hot shoe on the top of the Lumix DMC LX7. Close up photography is catered for by a macro mode that can focus from 1cm away from your subject. You also have the ability to fire off a very short burst of shots at a rate of 11 frames per second.

The video mode is another advanced area. You can shoot Full High Definition Movies. Stereo sound can be recorded to accompany your video clips. Other options include being able to record high speed movies to be played back in slow motion. You can record time lapse movies too.
