The Nikon Coolpix S640 is a 12 megapixel digital camera with a 5x zoom lens. The lens offers wide angle capabilities as do an increasing number of the current batch of digital cameras. Image stabilisation has been built into the lens unit. This helps to reduce the amount of blur that may affect a photo owing to unsteady hands.

Nikon are targeting the Coolpix S640 at anyone looking for a stylish pocket camera that is relatively easy to use. Nikon are claiming a fast start up time as well as low shutter delay times. This is always an attractive proposition.

The camera is available in four different colours. These are pink, white, red and silver. The design of the camera is quite simple and although there is noting that really makes it stand out from the crowd it looks good.

Images are composed on a 2.7 inch LCD screen. Nikon has also incorporated what it describes as its smart portrait system. As well as attempting to automatically remove any red eye in photos taken using flash it also uses a softer focus to give skin a smoother and more flattering look.

The Coolpix S640 captures standard definition movies. Power is supplied by a lithium ion battery.
