Overview
The Nikon D3100 is a starter Digital SLR. It has a 12 megapixels sensor. Compared with more advanced Digital SLRs the D3100 is a smaller, more lightweight model.
This type of Digital SLR is a good choice if you are relatively new to this type of camera and if you are looking to improve your knowledge of photography. Nikon have built a helpful guide into the D3100. This can point you in the right direction if you get stuck from time to time.
There are a full set of manual controls to get your teeth into. These include aperture priority and shutter priority. If you do not feel quite ready to tackle those controls there are also 6 simple scene modes you can choose from. These are Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close-up or Night Portrait.
The LCD screen is 3 inches in size. This offers live view for you to compose your images. There is also a viewfinder you can use.
Other features include an 11 point Auto Focus system. For when the light gets low the ISO range is ISO 100 – 3200. This can be expanded up to 12,800. Editing functions are also available to you to enhance pictures you have already taken without the need to revert to your computer.
Additionally the D3100 also has an advanced movie mode. It is capable of capturing full High Definition movies with a resolution of 1080p.
If this is your first Digital SLR, to help get you up and running you can buy the D3100 in kit form. When buying in kit form the camera comes with a wide angle lens with a focal length equivalent to 18 – 55mm in 35mm format.
