The PowerShot S40 provides Creative Zone modes and Image Programmed Control Zone modes in addition to Auto. It enables advanced and semi-pros to obtain quality results with their pictures. The Creative Zones allow users to set the exposure, shutter speed etc. manually and the Image Programmed Control Zone can set the appropriate mode that best matches the subject.
SLR Features
The PowerShot S40 was designed for creative digital photographers who demand high precision images in a compact body. The camera features three Auto-focus modes (including continuous and single) and 3 selectable AF points with 13 shooting modes, including Program AE, Shutter priority AE, Aperture priority AE and fully manual exposure control, meaning users can select the suitable exposure for different situations such as studio or low light settings.
A fully manual focus mode is also available if users wish to capture moving subjects quickly. These advanced controls give the user greater control over their final image.
Other advanced image capture controls include a histogram exposure graph for image evaluation (as seen on the Canon EOS D30 and PowerShot G2) that allows the photographer to see if an image is correctly exposed. Early indication of excess light or darkness allows exposure settings to be changed to obtain an optimal result. The histogram is displayed on the PowerShot S40's LCD.
The S40 comes equipped with 2 selectable continuous shooting modes, the high-speed mode and the standard mode. For continuous shooting the S40 can take approximately 2.5 images/sec in the high speed mode. The camera also features high precision white balance and manual white balance allowing for full control.
The PowerShot S40 has the fastest shutter speeds in its class (1/1500 s) which minimises the possibility of blurring fast-moving subjects.
The PowerShot S40 provides Auto Exposure Bracketing that takes three shots bracketed automatically within the set range. This method enables the camera to take 3 pictures with 3 different exposure settings giving the user a full choice of photographs. The shots are bracketed up to +/-2 stops at 1/3 stop increments.
