The Canon Powershot S5 IS is a heavyweight digital camera. It has a very long zoom lens, plus a set of manual exposure controls. This type of camera typically appeals to someone who is serious about photography and enjoys taking photographs of subjects such as sports and wildlife where it is not always possible to get in close to the action or the subject safely.
There are a couple of very useful additional controls that are not available on this type of camera. The first is an LCD screen that you can pull out and twist round to suit the angle you are taking the photograph from. This can also be very useful in strong sunlight when it may become difficult to see the screen. As well as the LCD screen there is also a viewfinder. You can adjust the sharpness of the image that appears in the viewfinder to suit your own eyesight.
