The Sony DSC W120 is a 7 megapixel digital camera. It has a 4x optical zoom lens. A maximum 19x smart zoom is available. Smart zoom can only be used when shooting at lower resolutions. 8x digital zoom is another option.

The focal length of lens is equivalent to 32 - 128mm in 35mm mode. The maximum lens aperture is f2,8 - f5.8.

Face detection focusing is available. This helps to produce sharper portrait shots. In macro mode the DSC W120 can focus from 4cm from the subject.

The 2.5 inch LCD screen is made up of around 115,000 pixels. An optical viewfinder is also available for composing shots.

The flash modes available are Auto, Forced Flash, Slow Syncro and No Flash. Red eye reduction can be turned on and off through the menu system. The intensity of the flash can be adjusted. When zoom is not in use the maximum range of the flash unit is 3.9m. When the zoom is in use the range falls to 1.9m.

Predefined scenes are Twilight, Twilight portrait, Soft snap, Landscape, Beach, Snow, Fireworks, High Sensitivity and Smile Shutter.

Movies with a maximum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels can be recorded. The top recording speed is 30 frames per second. As with the majority of digital cameras zoom can be applied before recording starts, but not once recording is in progress. Sound can be captured as well.

More advanced features include ISO (Auto, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200), metering (spot, multi point and centre weighted), white balance (Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent1, Fluorescent2, Fluorescent3, Incandescent, Flash) and exposure compensation (+/- 2.0 EV, 1/ 3 EV step).

Shutter speeds are set automatically by the camera in the range 1/8 to 1/1600 seconds.

A burst mode allows you to fire off up to 100 shots at a maximum rate of 0.66 shots per second.
