The Samsung WB1000 has 12 megapixels and a 5x optical zoom lens. The focal length of the lens is equivalent to 24 - 120mm in 35mm. This gives it wide angle properties making it useful for subjects such as interiors, landscapes, cityscapes and groups of people. 5x digital zoom is available too.
Other key features include High Definition movies, manual exposure and focusing controls, as well as image stabilisation. As with other Samsung digital cameras there are a few extra features thrown in such as different photo effects and the ability to shoot square photo. This can give a different feel to your photos, especially for portraits.
The LCD screen is 3 inches in size. It is made up of around 518,400 pixels. I found the LCD screen bright, clear and easy to see in sunshine.
After a photo has been taken, you can adjust brightness, contrast and saturation. There is an Automatic Contrast Balance feature available, plus a red eye fix. There is also a face retouch setting and a chance to add noise to a photo, as well as adjusting brightness and contrast.
The flash modes available are Auto, Auto & Red-eye reduction, Fill-in flash, Slow sync, Flash off, Red eye fix. Flash works to a maximum distance of 5.2m when the zoom is not being used and 2.5m when zoom is fully extended. Flash exposure compensation is also available.
You can access the following scene modes: Beauty Shot, Frame Guide, Night, Portrait, Children, Landscape, Close-up, Text, Sunset, Dawn, Backlight, Firework, Beach and Snow.
High Definition movies with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels are available. You can zoom in and out while recording the movie. Sound can be captured in stereo.
Among the more advanced features are:
All the necessary cables and software are supplied to attach the Samsung WB1000 to a computer, television set and compatible printer.

| Verdict: | It is not often you find a set of manual exposure controls on a camera like this one. Throw in High Definition movies, image stabilisation and one or two extra features and you can see Samsung is on the right lines with the WB1000. Photo quality is good and the camera is easy enough to use too. |
