The Panasonic DMC LZ7 has seven megapixels and a six times zoom lens. The amount of zoom available increases to nine times when shooting at three megapixels.
The focal length of the lens is equivalent to 37 - 222mm in 35mm format. The lens aperture works in the range Wide: F2.8 / F8.0 (2 steps) Tele: F4.5 / F13 (2 steps). 4x digital zoom is also available.
The DMC LZ7 comes with optical image stabilisation.
There is a self timer with a two or ten second delay.
Special settings are available to take photos that are ideal for 6 x 4" prints and for playing back on a widescreen television.
For close up shots the camera can focus from 5cm away from the subject.
The 2.5" LCD screen is made up of around 115,000 pixels. It has a high angle setting. This helps you to see the screen if you need to hold the camera above eye level. For example to take a photo over a crowd of people.
The built in flash unit has a maximum range of 5.4m falling to 3.3m when the zoom lens is in use. Flash modes available are: Auto, Auto/Red-eye Reduction, Forced On, Forced Off.
As usual an array of scene modes are available. These are: Portrait, Soft Skin, Scenery, Sports, Night Portrait, Night Scenery, Food, Party, Candle, Fireworks, Starry Sky, Beach, Aerial photo, Snow, High sensitivity, Baby1, Baby2 and Sunset, Pet. When you select a scene mode the camera will use what it considers to be the optimum settings for the shot.
Movies can be recorded for playback on a widescreen television. The maximum resolution is 848 x 480 pixels. Top speed is 30 frames per second. Sound can be recorded. Zoom can be applied before you start recording, but not while recording is in progress.
As you get to know the camera you may wish to experiment with settings for ISO (Auto, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1250 (High Sensitivity Mode : 3200)), white balance (Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Shade, Halogen, White Set) and exposure compensation (1/3 EV step, -2 - +2 EV).
Shutter speeds are set automatically by the camera. These work in the range 8 - 1/2000 seconds.
Unlimited consecutive shooting is also available.
All the necessary cables and software are supplied by Panasonic to connect the DMC LZ7 to a television set, computer and compatible printer.
