Megapixels and Zoom
The Panasonic DMC FX10 is a six megapixel camera with a standard three times zoom lens. The amount of zoom available can be increased to 4.1x when shooting at three megapixels. 4x digital zoom is another option.
The focal length of the lens is equivalent to 35 - 105mm in 35mm format. The aperture of the lens works in the range Wide: F2.8 / F8.0 (2 steps) Tele: F5.0 / F14 (2 steps).
Basics
There are special settings for taking photos ideal for 6 x 4" prints and also for displaying photos on wide screen televisions.
Image stabilisation is also available.
For when you would like to appear in the photo there is a self timer with a two or ten second delay.
Focusing
In macro mode the DMC FX10 can focus from 10cm away from the subject.
LCD
The 2.5 inch LCD screen performed well in bright sunlight. It also has a special high angle mode. This helps you to see the screen when the camera is held above eye level, perhaps to take a photo over the top of a crowd. The screen consists of around 115,000 pixels.
Flash
The maximum range of the flash unit is 5m. This falls to 2.8m when the zoom lens is in use. Flash modes are Auto, Auto/Red-eye Reduction, Forced On and Forced Off.
Scene Modes
A wide range of scene modes are available. These are Portrait, Soft Skin, Scenery, Sports, Night Portrait, Night Scenery, Self-Portrait, Food, Party, Candle, Fireworks, Starry Sky, Beach, Aerial photo, Snow, High sensitivity, Baby1, Baby2, Underwater, Sunset and Pet. When you select the most appropriate scene mode the camera will use what it considers to be the optimum settings for the shot.
Movies
This is one of the few digital cameras with a special wide screen mode (848 x 480 pixels). The top frame speed is 30 frames per second. Sound can be recorded, but zoom can only be applied before recording starts and not while it is in progress.
Advanced Features
There are a small number of more advanced features you can select. These are ISO sensitivity (Auto, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1250), white balance (Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Shade, Halogen, White Set) and exposure compensation (1/3 EV step, -2 - +2 EV). Unlimited continuous shooting is available too.
Shutter speeds are controlled automatically by the camera within the range 60 seconds to 8 / 1200 seconds. Shutter speeds above eight seconds are only available in starry sky mode. Metering is multi point.
Computer - Printers - Television
As with just about every digital camera currently available, software and cables are provided to connect the DMC FX10 to a television set, computer and compatible printer.
