The Panasonic Lumix DMC FS62 is one of the cheaper pocket cameras. Looking through the features it has the Lumix DMC FS62 compares favourably with other digital cameras available for around the same price. Headline features include 10 megapixels, a 4x optical zoom lens, image stabilisation and the ability to shoot wide screen movies.
It can focus from 5cm for close up photography. You also have access to colour options, a 2.5 inch LCD screen, a wide range of scene modes and red eye correction.
It is hard to beat the picture quality on offer for such a low price. The build and design of the camera is also impressive.
Outdoor 1 (Medium Zoom)
Looking at the overall sharpness of this photo the Lumix DMC FS62 has done very well indeed. Even in the shady areas around the names of the boats the camera has managed to keep noise levels down and bring out plenty of detail. As I would expect at this time of year there is an issue with glare from the low sun.
Outdoor 2 (No Zoom)
With the lens zoomed out the Lumix DMC FS62 produces a photo that is well above average when it comes to sharpness. The camera has captured plenty of detail too.
Outdoor 3 (Maximum Zoom)
What I like most about this photo is the depth of colour showing in the trees. The greens and orange colours contrast well with the blue sky and the white boats. Sharpness is some way above average.
Outdoor 4 (Building)
The level of detail showing in this shot is very good indeed. If you enlarge the picture individual bricks can be picked out easily. There is also very little fall off in focusing as you move out towards the edges of the photo.
Outdoor Portrait
Here the Lumix DMC FS62 manages to add a warm feel to the portrait, but manages to retain a natural look to the photo too. You should be able to take plenty of pleasing portrait shots with this camera.
Indoor Portrait with Flash
I am happy with this photo. The light from the flash does a good job of lighting up the face and reaches most parts of the hair.
Indoor Portrait without Flash
This is a reasonable effort in the conditions. It is difficult for me to find a place indoors that gets enough light late in the year for this test shot. There is some noise showing. This takes the edge off the crispness of the shot, but the camera still manages to outperform many more expensive cameras.
Colours
I like the colours this camera produces. They look well balanced and they do not overpower the scenes.
Macro
The macro shot is very good indeed. You would need to pay a lot more for a camera to be guaranteed to find one a lot better than the Lumix DMC FS62 when it comes to close up shots.
Overall
This camera outperforms a number of more expensive digital cameras in every area. You will be hard pressed to find a camera better than this in this price bracket.
Compared to more expensive Panasonic digital cameras this is an area where compromises have been made. Times are slower than average. A single photo timed 0.47 seconds. With flash turned on the delay increased to 1.61 seconds. Taking five photos without flash took 16.87 seconds. With flash turned on the time increased to 20.20 seconds.
To turn the camera on and take the first photo took 3.9 seconds.
You can compare this camera to other models by taking a look at the Shutter Lag Comparison Table.
This is a typical Panasonic pocket camera. It has an unfussy design with the lens unit sitting more or less flush to the body of the camera. The Lumix FS62 is available in black, red, blue, silver and pink.

Lithium ion. Panasonic suggests you should be able to take up to 370 photos in between charges.
Panasonic has built 50mb of memory into the Lumix DMC FS62. This is enough for around 11 photos. The camera is also compatible with SD and SDHC memory cards.

Very good. I found this camera to be straightforward.
Picture quality - simple design - value for money
Start up and shutter lag times could be a bit faster
It is difficult to come up with any digital camera in the same price bracket that can match the all round qualities of the Lumix DMC FS62. If you are looking for more of a fun, party camera it might be worth taking a look at the Fuji Finepix Z35. Be warned the Fuji Finepix Z35 does not come near the Lumix DMC FS62 when it comes to picture quality.
In my view it is hard to beat the Panasonic Lumix DMC FS62 when it comes to value for money. There are very few compromises made to keep the price down and this camera outperforms many much more expensive cameras.
