The Olympus MJU Tough 8000 is a robust digital camera. It copes with being used in water to a depth of 10m, it can be dropped from up to 2m and can handle extreme cold to -10 degrees centigrade. It is also crushproof for up to 100kg.

More standard features include 12 megapixels and a 3.6x, wide angle lens. The focal length of the lens is equivalent to 28 - 102 mm in 35mm format. 5x digital zoom is also available.

The LCD monitor is 2.7 inches in size. The screen is made up of around 230,000 dots.

The flash modes are on, off, automatic and red eye reduction. The range of the flash when ISO is set to 800 is 4m (wide angle) and 2.7m (telephoto).

There are a number of preset scene modes. These are: Portrait, Landscape, Night Scene, Night Scene with portrait, Sports, Indoor, Candle, Self-portrait, Sunset, Fireworks, Cuisine, Documents, Beach and Snow, Snow, Pre-Capturing Movie, Underwater Snapshot, Underwater Wide 1, Underwater Wide 2 and Underwater Macro.
