Megapixels and Zoom

Olympus MJU 840 The Olympus MJU 840 is an 8 megapixels digital camera. The camera has a 5x optical zoom lens. The focal length of the lens is equivalent to 36 - 180mm in 35mm format. The maximum aperture of the lens is f/3.3 (wide) and f/5 (tele). A 5.6x digital zoom is also available.

Basics

Focusing

For close up shots the MJU 840 is capable of focusing from 3cm away from the subject. It also offers a face detection mode to assist focusing for portrait shots.

LCD

The 2.7 inch LCD screen is made up of around 230,000 pixels.

Flash

The flash modes are automatic, red eye reduction, always on and always off.

Scene Modes

The scene modes available are: Portrait, Landscape, Landscape with Portrait, Night Scene, Night Scene with portrait, Sports, Indoor, Candle, Self-portrait, Available Light Portrait , Sunset, Fireworks, Cuisine, Behind Glass, Documents, Auction, Shoot & Select 1, Shoot & Select 2 and Beach and Snow.

Movies

TV quality movies can be captured. These have a maximum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels and a top speed of 30 frames per second. Sound can be recorded, but zoom can only be applied before recording starts.

Advanced Features

Among the more advanced features are metering (multi point, spot), exposure compensation (+/- 2 EV / 1/3 steps), ISO sensitivity (64, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600) and White Balance (Auto, Overcast, Sunlight, Tungsten, Fluorescent 1, Fluorescent 2 and Fluorescent 3).

Shutter speeds work in the range 4 to 1/2000 seconds. These are set automatically by the camera and can depend on the shooting mode.

There is also a burst mode. This lets you shoot up to 1 frame per second for 6 shots. There is a second burst mode available. This shoots at a maximum rate 6.9 frames per second for 10 shots, but it is only available if you decrease the resolution to 3 megapixels.
