The Olympus MJU 790 SW is a 7 megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical zoom lens. The lens has a focal length equivalent to 38 - 114mm in 35mm format. The maximum aperture of the lens is f3.5 - f5. 5x digital zoom is also available.

There are a comprehensive set of scene modes: Portrait, Landscape, Landscape with Portrait, Night Scene, Night Scene with portrait, Sports, Indoor, Candle, Self-portrait, Available Light Portrait, Sunset, Fireworks , Cuisine, Behind Glass, Documents, Auction, Shoot & Select 1, Shoot & Select 2, Beach and Snow, Underwater Snapshot, Underwater Wide 1, Underwater Wide 2 and Underwater Macro.

The maximum resolution for a movie is 640 x 480 pixels. The top recording speed is 30 frames per second. Sound can be recorded, but zoom can only be applied before shooting starts.

Among the more advanced features are white balance (Sunlight, Tungsten, Overcast, Flourescent 1, Flourescent 2, Flourescent 3), burst mode (1.1 fps / 3 frames SHQ image size / 6 frames HQ image size), metering (ESP light metering, Spot metering), exposure compensation (+/- 2 EV / 1/3 steps) and sensitivity (ISO 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600).

Shutter speeds work in the range 4 seconds to 1/1000 seconds. These are set automatically by the camera.
