Cheap Digital Cameras
The Casio Exilim EX-Z1050 is a ten megapixel digital camera with a three times optical zoom lens.
The focal length of the lens is 38 - 114mm. The maximum aperture is F2.8 (W) to F5.1 (T). To boost the zoom there is a digital zoom feature offering up to 4x zoom.
As is becoming more and more common there are special settings that are ideal for taking photos for 6 x 4" prints and for viewing photos on a wide screen television.
The self timer has delay times of two and ten seconds. There is also a setting that fires off three consecutive shots at the end of a ten second delay period.
The camera can be used purely as a voice recorder. You can also record sound with still photos.
You can apply a number of colour filters (black and white, sepia, red, green, blue, yellow, pink, purple), as well as adjusting levels of sharpness, contrast and saturation.
Anti shake is available too.
Manual focusing is available with the Exilim EX-Z1050. In macro mode the camera can focus from 10cm away from the subject.
The LCD screen is 2.6 inches wide. I found it very easy to read in bright sunshine. The screen is made up of around 114,960 pixels.
The maximum range of the flash unit is 3.3m. This falls to around 1.8m when the zoom lens is in use. The flash modes are Auto, Flash On, Flash Off, Rapid Flash, Soft Flash, Red Eye Reduction. You can also adjust the power of the flash.
As ever with Casio digital cameras there is a very wide range of preset scene modes. Selecting a scene identifies to the camera the type of photo you are about to take. It will then use what it considers to be the best settings for the shot. The scene modes are: portrait, scenery, portrait with scenery, children, sports, candlelight portrait, party, pet, flower, natural green, autumn leaves, soft flowing water, splashing water, sundown, night scene, night scene portrait, fireworks, food, text, collection, auction, backlight, anti shake, high sensitivity, underwater, monochrome, retro, twilight, layout, auto framing, id photo, old photo, business cards/documents and white board.
If you are planning to shoot movies it is worth knowing that you can zoom in and out before filming starts, but not once you have started recording. Sound can be captured. The maximum resolution of each movie is 640 x 480 pixels. The top speed is thirty frames per second.
Advanced features you can use include metering (Multi-pattern, centre weighted, spot), exposure compensation (-2EV to +2EV (in 1/3EV units)), white balance (auto, sunny, cloudy, shade, tungsten, day fluorescent, night fluorescent, manual), ISO (Auto, 80, 100, 200, 400, 800) and continuous shooting.
Shutter speeds are set by the camera. These work in the range ½ to 1/1000 seconds. In night mode the range is greater and is between 4 to 1/1000seconds.
The Exilim EX-Z1050 can be connected to a television, computer and compatible printer. Casio have included all the necessary cables and software in the box.

| Verdict: | I liked the Casio Exilim EX-Z1050. In many ways it is a fairly typical compact digital camera. With ten megapixels there is plenty of scope for large prints or for cropping photos. The camera is easy to use and I also found it performed well in lowlight. |
