The Canon Powershot SX100 IS is an 8 megapixel digital camera with a 10x optical zoom lens. The focal length of the lens is equivalent to 36 - 360mm in 35mm format. The amount of zoom can be increased through Digital Tele-Converter (1.6x) or Safety Zoom (2x). 4x digital zoom is also available.
The lens also has image stabilisation built in.
Manual focusing is available, as is a face detection setting for portraits. For close up photography the Powershot SX100 IS can focus from 1cm away from the subject.
The LCD screen is 2.5" in size and is made up of around 172,000 pixels. There is no viewfinder.
The flash modes available are Auto, Manual Flash On and Off. Slow sync speed and red eye reduction can also be turned on. The flash unit pops up and has a range of 3m (wide) and 2m (tele).
Other settings that can be used with flash are: flash exposure compensation (+/- 2 EV in 1/3 stop increments. Face Detection FE. Safety FE.) and flash exposure lock. The power level of the flash can also be adjusted.
Canon also sells a compatible external flash unit (Canon's High Power Flash HF-DC1).
The scene modes available are Portrait, Landscape, Night Snapshot, Kids & Pets, Night Scene, Indoor, Foliage, Snow, Beach, Fireworks and Aquarium.
Movies with sound can be recorded. Movies have a maximum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels and a top speed of 30 frames per second. The maximum duration of a movie is 4gb in size or 1 hour.
Digital zoom is available while a movie is being recorded, but optical zoom can only be applied before recording starts.
Fully manual exposure controls are available. You also have access to aperture priority and shutter priority. Shutter speeds can be set in the range 15 - 1/2500 seconds. The maximum aperture is f/2.8 - f/4.3.
Other advanced features include white balance (Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Fluorescent H, Custom), metering (Evaluative (linked to Face Detection AF frame), Centre-weighted average, Spot (Centre)), exposure compensation (+/- 2 EV in 1/3 stop increments), continuous shooting (Approx. 1.3fps AF/LV: Approx. 0.8fps (until memory card becomes full)) and Sensitivity (AUTO, High ISO Auto, 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600).
Auto exposure Lock can also be selected.
Cables and software are provided by Canon to attach the Powershot SX100 IS to a compatible printer, television or computer.
