The Canon Powershot A570 IS is a seven megapixel camera. It has a 4x zoom lens. The capacity of the zoom can be increased when taking photos at lower resolutions by a maximum of 1.9x. 4x digital zoom is also available. The maximum aperture of the lens is f/2.6 wide / f/5.5 tele.

The Powershot A570 IS offers a manual focus option. There is also a face detection setting. For close up shots the camera can focus from 5cm from the subject.

The 2.5 inch LCD screen is made up of around 115,000 pixels. There is also a viewfinder available for composing photos.

The built in flash unit has a maximum range of 3.5m. This falls to around 2.2m when the zoom lens is in use. You can boost the range of the flash by buying Canon's High Power Flash HF-DC1. This is an external unit.

The flash modes are Auto, Manual Flash On / Off. Red eye reduction is also available.

Extra control over the flash is provided. It can be set to high power, low power or normal. Flash exposure compensation is also available.

There are a selection of preprogrammed scene modes. These are Portrait, Landscape, Night Snapshot, Kids & Pets, Indoor, Night Scene, Foliage, Snow, Beach, Fireworks, Aquarium and Underwater. When you select a scene it helps the camera to choose the optimum settings for the shot.

Colour Effects
You can adjust the colour for a photo using Vivid, Neutral, Sepia, Black & White, Custom Color (limited).

The maximum speed of a movie is 30 frames per second. The highest resolution is 640 x 480 pixels. Sound can be captured and you can also zoom in and out while shooting.

There is also a one minute high speed movie setting. This allows for slow motion replays. These movies are shot at a lower resolution.

For the more serious photographer there is manual exposure, shutter priority and aperture priority. Shutter speeds work in the range 15 - 1/2000 seconds.

Other advanced features include metering (Evaluative, Centre-weighted average, Spot (centre or linked to Face Detection AF frame)), white balance (Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Fluorescent H, Underwater, Custom), continuous shooting (Approx. 1.7 fps (until memory card becomes full)), ISO sensitivity (AUTO, High ISO Auto, 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600) and exposure compensation (+/- 2 EV in 1/3 stop increments).

Cables and software are provided by Canon to attach the Powershot A570 IS to a compatible printer, television or computer.

You can buy a selection of tele converters to increase the scope of the camera's lens. These are wide angle (0.7x - WC-DC52), telephoto (1.75x - TC-DC52A) and close up (250D -52mm).

Verdict:	The Canon Powershot A570 IS scored well in all of my tests. Picture quality is some way above average especially for a camera in this price bracket. It also has a range of features you are unlikely to find in many other cameras for the same price. Recommended.
