The Canon Powershot A1000 IS is a 10 megapixel digital camera with a 4x optical zoom. If you are prepared to shoot at a lower resolution then extra zoom becomes available.

The focal length of the lens is equivalent to 35 - 140mm in 35mm format.

The LCD monitor is 2.5 inches in size. The screen is made up of around 115,000 dots. A viewfinder is also available.

The flash modes are: Auto, On and Off. Slow Sync Speed, Red-eye Reduction, Flash Exposure Compensation, Face Detection FE and Flash Exposure Lock are also available. The maximum flash range is 4m. This falls to 2m when the zoom lens is fully extended. To increase the power of the flash you can buy a separate flash unit. This is Canon's High Power Flash HF-DC1.

There are a number of preset scene modes. These are: Portrait, Landscape, Night Snapshot, Indoor, Kids & Pets, Sunset, Foliage, Snow, Beach, Fireworks, Night Scene, Aquarium and ISO 3200.

The Powershot A1000 IS can shoot standard TV quality movies with a maximum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels and a top speed of 30 frames per second. Sound can be recoded and zoom applied before shooting starts. Digital zoom can be applied during recording.
