At first glance the Nikon Coolpix S570 and Samsung WB1000 look very similar digital cameras. They both have 12 megapixels, a 5x optical zoom lens, can take a good quality photo and they will both fit into a good sized pocket. There the similarities end. Samsung has packed the WB1000 with a lot more features while Nikon has delivered a camera that is a fair bit cheaper and easier to use.

Even from the basic specification you can see that the two cameras are very different. In addition to the differences listed above Samsung has added features such as a recycle bin and a picture search facility to the WB1000. The recycle bin offers you protection against the accidental deletion of photos.
It is not often you see a specification for a pocket sized digital camera that includes all the features the WB1000 offers. The manual exposure controls are likely to appeal to someone who likes the idea of being more creative with their photography. On top of this it is good to see that you are able to zoom in and out while you are shooting a movie. The 24mm lens also gives you extra options when it comes to shooting wide scenes such as landscapes and cityscapes.
The two cameras look quite different. The Coolpix S570 takes on an unfussy, yet quite sleek appearance. Samsung has included a small grip on the right hand side of the WB1000. They have also added dials to the top of the camera to show remaining battery power and memory card usage. This is a small touch, but it makes remaining levels crystal clear.
There is very little to choose between the two cameras in this area. The Coolpix S5700 timed 0.32 seconds for a single shot with the WB1000 taking 0.35 seconds. Roles reverse when taking more than one shot with the WB1000 being a little faster..
Both cameras use lithium ion batteries.
When it comes to picture quality there is not a great deal to choose between the two cameras, especially if you see yourself taking snapshot sized prints in the main. The Coolpix S5700 does have a slight edge in this area. In fact for a relatively inexpensive pocket camera it performs very well in this area. I was very impressed by the amount of brightness in the photos it takes.
As you would expect the Coolpix S5700 is the easier camera to use. A lot of this is simply down to the range of features the WB1000 has, but credit must also go to Nikon for making their menu system one of the clearest and easiest to use.
Both cameras have a lot going for them. If all you are looking for is a point and shoot pocket camera then the Coolpix S5700 is a very good choice at a very reasonable price point. If you are looking for more features and controls then the Samsung WB1000 has more than most pocket sized cameras and is well worth taking a closer look.
