Canon Powershot D10 vs Olympus MJU Tough 8000 Comparison
Canon Powershot D10
Olympus MJU Tough 8000
The Olympus MJU Tough 8000 and the Canon Powershot D10 are two of the small number of digital cameras that are waterproof, freezeproof and also shockproof. This gives these cameras a versatility you do not find often with digital cameras. As well as being able to use these cameras around the pool they are popular with families where the children may get their hands on the camera.

Features
Looking at the basic specification details the MJU Tough 8000 has an edge in a number of areas. It has extra megapixels, a wide angle lens, closer macro focusing, a larger screen and it is also classed as crushproof to 100kg.
The Powershot D10 may offer more features for fine tuning your pictures, such as various colour options, but it does not match up to the MJU Tough 8000 in terms of general features.
Design
The design of these two cameras is very different indeed. Olympus has gone for a look more in line with a typical pocket camera, while Canon have come up with a totally different look and style. The Powershot D10 has a much wider body. Design is a matter of personal taste, but I like the boldness and colour of the Powershot D10.
Start Up and Shutter Lag
The tables are turned when it comes to shutter delay and start up times. Here I found the Powershot D10 to be faster in most of my tests. To turn the Canon camera on and take the first shot took 1.92 seconds compared with 3.39 for the Olympus. There was not a great deal to choose in taking a shot once the camera was up and running. The times here were 0.33 seconds for the Powershot D10 and 0.39 seconds for the MJU Tough 8000. The MJU Tough 8000 had a slight edge for a single shot with flash timing 0.53 seconds as against 1.05 seconds.
Power Supply
Both cameras are powered by lithium ion batteries. Make sure the camera is dry before removing the battery for charging.
Picture Quality
There was little to choose here. As may be expected both cameras fall a littel below the very best picture quality, but they are fine in most typical snapshot situations.
Ease of Use
This is another area where I feel Olympus has the edge. This is partly down to the fact the Powershot D10 has extra menu options and it will take a while for you to get to know exactly what the camera offers. If all you want to do is use your camera as a simple point and shoot model you should have little problem with either model.
Verdict
The winner for me in this category is the Olympus MJU Tough 8000. This is down to the slightly better feature set it offers. Here in the U.K. you can also pick up the camera for a fair bit cheaper than you can the Canon Powershot D10. If you are tempted by the design of the Powershot D10 then that could prove to be the clincher as if you are not all that fussed by a couple of extra megapixels, a slightly larger LCD etc. then there is not a great deal to split the cameras in terms of picture quality.
